Canadian machine learning researchers have already declared publicly their desire to make Canada’s Montreal a hub of innovation for machine learning methods. One can easily argue that this is already the case considering the large number of well known researchers leading the machine learning field from Montreal’s universities in close collaboration with researchers in Toronto and other major Canadian cities. It only makes sense that they start organizing the best summer schools to get students and industry professional up-to-speed with the latest and greatest research results in machine learning.
The deep learning and reinforcement learning summer schools will be held in Montreal back-to-back between June 26 and July 4th, 2017, with the deep learning school going first followed by the reinforcement learning school. The two schools are organized by researchers from the Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms (MILA) at the University of Montreal and researchers at McGill University. the schools are supported by the Canadian Institute For Advanced Research (CIFAR) and the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques.
The organizers have attracted an very strong lineup of invited speakers, all at the cutting edge of machine learning research, including Rich Zemel, Doina Precup, Nando de Freitas, Ian Goodfellow, and Rich Sutton among several others. This summer schools is not one to be missed.
Registration is now open for students and industry professionals and will remain open until March 20th. Chances are that acceptance will be competitive so I’d start preparing my application as soon as possible. Looking at the application form, they are looking for people with some research background even if it is not on deep or reinforcement learning. It makes sense as I doubt they will spend much time trying to teach people the basics of machine learning.
